Timothy Theodore “Tim” Duncan (April 25, 1976-) has won the most prestigious awards at every level during his basketball career, despite not playing organized basketball until ninth grade, and is the only player in NBA history to be named to both the All-NBA and All-Defensive Teams in his first 13 seasons. Duncan grew up in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and went on to play college basketball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Tim led Wake to two Atlanticst Conference titles and earned three NCAA Defensive Player of the Year awards and All-American honors as well as the 1997 Naismith College Player of the Year and John Wooden Award winner. The 6’11” center and power forward agreed to complete his college degree – his late mother’s wish – despite being heralded as a #1 pick in the NBA draft three years running. Upon graduation, the San Antonio Spurs took Duncan with the #1 overall pick of the 1997 NBA Draft aligning him alongside Hall of Famer center David Robinson. The duo of Robinson at 7’1” and Duncan at 6’11” were quickly dubbed the “Twin Towers” and became the most dominant frontcourt in the NBA. Tim won the NBA Rookie of the Month award in every month of the 1997-98 season and the subsequently took home the NBA Rookie of the Year award as he averaged 21.1 points, 11.9 rebound and 2.5 blocks per game. He also earned his first of 15 NBA All-Star Game appearances that year.
