Derrick Rose
Derrick Martell Rose (October 4, 1988-) led his high school basketball team to back-to-back state Illinois championships – a feat not accomplished neither to that point nor since – and later became only the second Chicago Bull to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award with Michael Jordan. The Chicago native wowed the basketball world early on with his ball handling skills and shooting ability despite growing up in one of the more dangerous neighborhoods around the Windy City. Derrick took his talents to Simeon Career Academy where he led them to the 2006 and 2007 Illinois High School Association Class AA Boys’ Basketball State Championships. Rose then went on to play college ball with at the University of Memphis. In his one season with the Tigers, and legendarych John Calipari, Derrick led Memphis to a number one ranking, a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament and then the National Championship game before falling to the Kansas Jayhawks. Derrick was named a 2007-08 NCAA AP All-American with Memphis and after only one year with the Memphis Tigers, Rose declared himself eligible for the NBA draft to which the Chicago Bulls selected him with the #1 overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft. Derrick scored 1,361 points and averaged 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists in his rookie year. He was named the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year and was an NBA All-Rookie First Team selection. Rose’s best year came in 2010-11 when topped the 2,000-point mark with the Bulls and led them to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1998. The three-time NBA All-Star averaged 25.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game that year and was named the 2010 NBA MVP. Rose collapsed during the 2011 playoffs with a torn ACL and was limited to only 39 games in 2011-12. Injuries plagued the young guard for the next three seasons as he missed the entire 2012-13 campaign and he appeared in only 10 and 51 regular season games, respectively in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Rose returned to the Bulls lineup at midseason and finished the year with the team. After a full season in 2015-16 in Chicago, Rose was traded to the New York Knicks for whom he played one season. He signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in July 2017.
