Christian Laettner
Christian Donald Laettner (August 17, 1969-) is arguably the greatest college basketball player in the history of the NCAA toutnament, holding the records for most games played (23), free throws (142) and attempts (167) and points (407) and he is the only player to start every game in four consectuitve Final Fours. Christian grew up near Buffalo, New York with humble beginnings that included working on farms to supplement his allowance and working as a janitor in high school in order to help pay for his tuition. Attending the private high school, Nichols School, Laettner set numerous school records and left as the school’s career points lead of better than 2,00 points while also leading the Vikings to two state championships. After a stellar high school career, the now-top recruit has his pick of NCAA basketball programs including North Carolina and Virginia, but he selected Duke University, playing forch Mike Krzyzewski. In his first year in Durham, North Carolina, Laettner helped lead the Blue Devils to the NCAA Final Four Semifinals before being ousted by Seton Hall. But this was just the beginning for the 6’11” power forward/center, as he quickly became the leader of the team with the departure of NBAer Danny Ferry and the arrivals of guards Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill. Christian’s numbers improved each year as he averaged 19.8 points per game in 1990-91, leading Duke to the NCAA Division I National Championship in school history. Laettner was ultimately named the 1990-91 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player.
